How do I ask visitors a question before the game?
Quick answer
Open the campaign's Sign-up tab and turn on Survey. Write a headline, one question and 2 to 8 answers, each with a label and a tag. The visitor taps an answer, the game appears, and the answer is saved as a tag on the Shopify customer, in the Subscribers list and CSV, and in the fields your email platform, Zapier or Shopify Flow receive.
Quick question adds an optional first step to any campaign: a spin wheel, a scratch card, a slot machine or a mystery pack. Before the game, the pop-up shows your logo, a headline such as "Unlock a Mystery Offer ðŸŽ", one question such as "What are you shopping for today?" and 2 to 8 answer buttons. The visitor taps one, the question fades out and the normal game appears: sign-up form, play, win.
The answer is not just a nice touch. It travels with the sign-up as a tag, next to the campaign's custom tag, so you can segment subscribers by what they came for and send each group the right follow-up.
How to turn it on
Step 2 — At the top of the tab, switch on Survey. The preview jumps to the new QUESTION screen, next to the GAME and WIN screens.
Step 3 — Write the headline and the question.
Step 4 — Edit the answers. Three are pre-filled (New arrivals, Best sellers, Sale); add up to five or remove down to two. Each answer has a label, the text on the button, and a tag, filled in automatically from the label ("Best sellers" becomes
best-sellers) and editable.Step 5 — Pick the button style: outline (transparent buttons with a border in the campaign's font color, like the preview) or filled (the colors of the spin button).
Step 6 — Save. The question is live on the next page load.
Font, colors and background come from the campaign's design, so the question screen matches every template without extra settings.
For finer control, the AI CSS Assistant can restyle it from the QUESTION screen ("make the answer buttons gold with rounded corners"), or target .cr-survey-option in the custom CSS.
Tags: a few rules
- A tag can contain letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens and underscores, up to 40 characters. Commas are removed because Shopify splits customer tags on commas.
- Tags must be unique within the question. Two answers with the same tag are rejected when you save.
- Only tags that exist in the saved campaign are ever stored: a visitor cannot inject a tag of their own.
- The campaign's custom tag (Global tab) keeps working exactly as before. The answer tag is added next to it, never merged into it.
What the visitor sees
- The question is shown every time the pop-up opens, in every layout: pop-up, sidebar, notification, full screen and embedded.
- The X closes the pop-up as usual. The launch icon reopens it on the question.
- A visitor who answered and closed before signing up sees the game, not the question, when they come back. The answer is kept in the browser until the sign-up is sent.
- Visitors who already joined the campaign never see the question again.
Where the answer shows up
In the dashboard, the Subscribers page gets an Answer column and the CSV export gets Tags, SurveyQuestion and SurveyAnswer columns at the end of each row, so existing import mappings keep working. The campaign analytics count how many visitors answered.
On Shopify, with Create Shopify customer enabled, the answer tag is added to the customer's tags next to the campaign's custom tag. Existing tags are kept.
Every integration receives the answer in its own fields. The question and the answer label are sent as text, the tag as a tag or a second field:
| Integration | Where the answer lands |
|---|---|
| Shopify Flow | Trigger fields Survey Question, Survey Answer, Survey Tag and Tags (the campaign tag and the answer tag, comma separated). In a workflow they appear as surveyQuestion, surveyAnswer, surveyTag and tags. |
| Klaviyo | Profile properties CRZ_Survey (the answer label) and CRZ_SurveyTag, next to CRZ_Tag. |
| Mailchimp | The answer tag is added as a member tag, together with the campaign's custom tag. |
| Omnisend | Custom properties CRZ_Survey and CRZ_SurveyTag, and the answer tag in the contact's tags. |
| ActiveCampaign | The answer tag is added to the contact. Create the tags in ActiveCampaign first: a tag that does not exist there is skipped, the contact and the campaign tag still go through. |
| Campaign Monitor | Custom fields CRZ_Survey and CRZ_SurveyTag. |
| MailerLite | Fields crz_survey and crz_survey_tag. |
| Brevo | Attributes CRZ_SURVEY and CRZ_SURVEY_TAG. |
| Zapier | Payload fields CRZ_Survey, CRZ_SurveyTag and CRZ_Tags (campaign tag and answer tag, comma separated), next to CRZ_Tag. |
Ideas
- "What are you shopping for today?" with your main categories, then a Klaviyo or Mailchimp flow that opens with the matching products.
- "Who is this for?" (Me / A gift) to separate self-purchasers from gift buyers before the holidays.
- "How did you hear about us?" to compare acquisition channels directly in your Subscribers export.
- Use the Survey Tag in a Shopify Flow condition to add the customer to a segment or send an internal notification for a high-value interest.
People also ask
Can the visitor skip the question?
No. Once the question screen is shown, the only ways forward are an answer or the close button. Visitors who close the pop-up can reopen it from the launch icon and still see the question. A visitor who already answered goes straight to the game.
Does the answer change the prize?
No. The prize is drawn from the campaign's rewards exactly as without the question. The answer is for segmentation: use it in your email platform or in Shopify Flow to route the follow-up.
Can I translate the question?
Yes. The headline, the question and every answer appear in the Translations tab with the rest of the campaign text. Keep the answers in the same order after translating: translations are matched by position.
